Camp Marimeta History In 1947, Edna and Nate Wasserman bought a small 3 cabin resort on Meta Lake, which has now blossomed into a gorgeous camp facility that is the home to over 250 campers and counselors each and every summer. Marimeta is more than a camp… it’s a feeling. For almost 70 years, several thousand young ladies have called it their summer home. Third generation camp directors Sandy and Terry Cohen have operated Marimeta since 1984. Nestled in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin, Marimeta is situated on Meta Lake. A private 200-acre lake with no public access. Cabins at Marimeta Our girls live in one of 13 well-appointed cabins complete with electricity and bathrooms with hot and cold running water. Our cabins are equipped with thermostat-controlled heaters to help take the chill out of a cool northern Wisconsin evening. The Isle of View: The Lodge, Our Directors, and Admin Staff Our administrative staff lives in the Main Lodge affectionately named the “Isle of View”. The Lodge is everyone’s living room and is where our main offices are located. It is here that our girls come to visit daily. Whether to check their schedule, visit with administrative staff, or just get a piece of fresh fruit in between activities. The Lodge has a comfortable living room area, a staff retreat, and even a large kitchen for cooking classes. On Sunday mornings, campers are usually found here lounging in pajamas, playing jacks, and laughing with other members of the Marimeta family, just as they would in their own home on a weekend morning. Monday through Saturday, the main office is hustling and bustling with campers and counselors planning and conducting their daily schedules. Health Center Services Two nurses and sometimes a weekly physician and their families live next door to the Lodge in our Health Center. It is here that everyone comes if they are not feeling well or to take their daily medication should that be necessary. It’s a lovely little cottage where all of our health needs are met. Upstairs in the same building is our Arts and Crafts room. The Best Camp Food Just outside the Lodge is the famous Marimeta Mess Hall, our large, bright, and clean dining room filled with round tables, complete with lazy Susans. During each meal, this is where our campers get to know each other with pleasant conversation, nutritious, and delicious meals every day. Our fantastic chefs serve food with a flair for even the pickiest of eaters. Laughter, song, and cheer complete our lunches and dinners. One of the many things that Marimeta is known for is our food. Some say it’s the most exceptional food at an overnight camp! Our quality and variety of cuisine are hard to beat. Marimeta’s Exciting Activities With a lush pine backdrop facilities include 4 lighted tennis courts, a high school regulation lit basketball court, athletic fields, volleyball courts, archery, and golfing cages for anyone who wants to join in. A 31-foot climbing wall and much more are part of Marimeta’s state of the art equipment. A beautifully lit stage can be found in our Recreation hall. Here drama classes, aerobics, dance, yoga, gymnastics, evening programs, and even a Sunday night movie can be seen. Plaques from 1947 to the current day, adorn the walls so all visitors and alumni can see those who have been part of the winning spirit at Marimeta! Tennis Complex Our tennis instruction is headed by not one, but two tennis pros. Many girls choose to come to Camp Marimeta over a tennis camp because of the professional quality instruction they receive. With a lush pine backdrop, our facilities include 4 well-lit tennis courts and a high school regulation lit basketball court. You will find many of our pioneer campers here, after taps playing a set or two. Our Private Waterfront Over 1000 feet of frontage on private Meta Lake is where you will find all kinds of water-related fun. It is in our Starfish Aquatic program where many girls learn to swim in our sand bottom lake. Activities on the Lake Meta waterfront include swimming, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, and tubing on one of our three gorgeous competition ski boats. A fleet of Hobie Catamaran sail-boats awaits your children each day as they take to the waterfront on Lake Meta. Windsurfing, and riding on a gorgeous 24-foot pontoon boat are two more of the favorite water activities that can be found here. A water slide attached to the newest and safest dock system provides safe boundaries for our swimmers, some of whom may even venture out to the Summit. About Marimeta Campers Our campers range in age from 7 – 15 years old. Many girls come from the Chicagoland area, but we also welcome campers from all over the United States and abroad. Girls arrive from Mexico, Israel, and from as far away as Japan. Our children can attend camp for either a 4 or 8-week session, and we proudly receive an over 90% return rate of our campers each year! Our Incredible Marimeta Staff Many of our Marimeta staff members have grown up at camp. We also have young men and women from all over the world. Whether they are cabin counselors, activity directors, maintenance staff, dining room staff, housekeeping, or in our health center, we have nearly 70 staff members taking care of Marimeta and her girls every single day. Arriving at Camp Marimeta There is a realization that it is not the buildings that make a camp, nor the equipment. It is a combination of the campers, counselors, administrators, and directors that make camp unique and set it apart from all the rest.
